Alabama Payday Loans and Cash Advances
Payday loans are made under Alabama's Deferred Presentment Services Act (Ala. Code § 5-18A). The rules are simple:
- Up to $500 in total payday loans at one time, across all lenders (a statewide database checks this).
- A fee of up to 17.5% of the amount advanced – $17.50 per $100.
- A term of 10 to 31 days, usually timed to your next payday.
| Payday loan amount | Maximum fee (17.5%) | Total due on payday |
|---|---|---|
| $100 | $17.50 | $117.50 |
| $300 | $52.50 | $352.50 |
| $500 | $87.50 | $587.50 |
These are the state maximums; your lender shows the exact fee and APR before you sign. Because the term is short, a $17.50 fee per $100 equals a high APR, so a payday loan is best for a one-time gap until payday, not for ongoing expenses.
Installment Loans in Alabama
An installment loan is repaid in fixed monthly payments over several months instead of all at once on payday. That makes each payment smaller and easier to plan for, and you know the payoff date from day one. Amounts and rates depend on the lender, your income and Alabama's small loan laws; every payment amount, the APR and the total cost are listed on the agreement before you sign.
Alabama Title Loans: a $1,000 Example
Title loans are made at our offices under the Alabama Pawnshop Act. The monthly charge is capped at 25% of the amount borrowed and the due date cannot be sooner than 30 days. On $1,000 that is up to $250 for 30 days, or $1,250 due at day 30 (state maximum). Renewing adds a new monthly charge that does not reduce the balance; Alabama gives 30 days after the due date to redeem the title before the vehicle can be forfeited.
What to Bring
- A valid picture ID – a driver's license, state ID or passport. You must be 18 or older.
- Proof of income – a recent pay stub, benefits letter or bank statement. Self-employed? Bank statements work.
- An active checking account – for payday and installment loans, so the money can be deposited and repaid.
- A working phone number and email – used to confirm your request.
- For a title loan: your vehicle and a clear (lien-free) title in your name.
Active-Duty Service Members
If you are on active duty or a covered dependent, for example at Fort Benning across the river, the federal Military Lending Act protects you: covered credit, including payday, installment and vehicle-title loans, is capped at a 36% Military Annual Percentage Rate, and a vehicle title generally cannot be used as security. Talk to your installation's legal assistance office or call us before you apply.
Online requests may be reviewed by third-party lenders; approval, the amount, the APR and the fees are set by the lender and shown to you before you sign. Not every applicant is approved.
